Win tickets to Jovanotti concert

Italian language has been connected to the bel canto and opera. But have you ever heard Italian rap? My first experience with this was in the nineties when Jovanotti became famous in Latin America with this song:

Jovanotti has already achieved rock star status in much of the rest of the world. In his native Italy, over the course of 25 years, he has sold over five million albums. Jovanotti’s most recent studio album, 2011’s Ora (Now), debuted at #1 there, went on to become the best-selling album of the year, and resulted in sell-outs over 50 arena and stadium dates. In the last few years, he has graced the cover of the Italian editions of Rolling Stone, GQ, Vanity Fair and L’Uomo Vogue, among other magazines.

Outside Europe, Jovanotti has long been a favorite of Latin American listeners and artists, including Oscar winner Jorge Drexler and Juanes, with whom Jovanotti has collaborated live and on recent recordings. Although Jovanotti is still in his early 40s, a whole generation of younger Latin alternative artists grew up admiring him; he has in turn invited Los Amigos Invisibles, Ana Tijoux, Bomba Estereo and others to open for him on recent tours.

Jovanotti has begun to spend a considerable amount of his time and career energies in the U.S. In the summer of 2009, he and a mostly US-based band performed 16 sold-out shows at downtown New York clubs. He has returned for brief stints in other parts of this country, including a performance at Central Park SummerStage in 2010, and earlier this year, with TV on the Radio, in The Music of The Rolling Stones Hot Rocks 1964-1971 at Carnegie Hall.

This fall, Jovanotti will move to New York for a year. The relocation is a sort of return to origins for the artist, who counts The Beastie Boys as his primary influence (and, later in his life, collaborators and friends). When Jovanotti performed at the Bowery Ballroom in March 2012, he sang some lines from “No Sleep till Brooklyn.” He was not only acknowledging his whereabouts, but his beginnings, when he sported a sideways baseball cap and a “Get Off My Dick” t-shirt on the cover of his 1988 debut, the rap album Jovanotti for President.

Like Drums? Act fast and get free tickets to an explosive Japanese Taiko drumming concert with HO ETSU

THIS OFFER ENDS BY 11:59 PM ON FRIDAY JULY 27, 2012

Have you ever been to a Taiko drumming concert? If you have not, then this is your chance to go to one!  I believe you will find the unique, cultural appeal of this concert very interesting. Ho Etsu Taiko is a Chicago-based Japanese drum ensemble that brings a passionate energy and lively spirit to the rich tradition of  Taiko drumming. Ho Etsu means ‘a way to spread joy’, and this idea centers their philosophy. They bring a bright, energizing sound to the stage to infuse taiko’s cultural legacy with new vitality, bridging the tradition through fresh experiences and influences. Ho Etsu formed in 1997 at the Midwest Buddhist Temple in Chicago’s historic Old Town neighborhood. The original Midwest Buddhist Temple taiko group was the first ensemble in Chicago, born in the 1970s during the earliest wave of Japanese-American taiko. From these deep roots, Ho Etsu blossomed into one of the most dynamic and exciting taiko ensembles in the city.

This July 28, Ho Etsu Taiko is inviting us to help them celebrate their 15th Anniversary. Appropriately named HANABI (‘fireworks’), this concert will introduce us to their explosive sound and striking compositions.  In addition, they will be joined on stage by one of their earliest mentors – Kiyoshi Nagata – and his Toronto-based professional taiko and music ensemble, Nagata Shachu. As they continue to build upon their unique Taiko foundation stemming from both Japanese and American influences, this group aspires to bring a youthful and energizing sound to the stage.

Cycling in Chicago and SummerDance Fest

Who knew I was going to enjoy cycling in the city so much? How did this happen? Well, my friend Ezra, an expert in fixing and customizing bikes,  recently got me this beauty of a bike:

It is a 1970s Schwinn Le Tour Tourist . This beauty is just what I needed: It is light so I can easily lift it, with curvy handles so I don’t have to lean too much when riding, and it has a nice and comfy seat. I have been using this little bike as much as I can since I got it and I am having so much fun. I feel so free when I am riding it : I enjoy the sensation of the warm summer breeze caressing my face, the sound of the birds chirping, and the sight of the scenery around me. I know, it sounds cheesy, but I feel so much more relaxed when I bike  than when I drive that I am now trying to go everywhere on it!  So far, I have used it to go to Pitchfork Fest and to Montrose Beach this weekend and it has been a blessing. No more wasting time looking for parking or dealing with traffic! (I deliberately choose the quietest routes). What’s more, everybody has been cordial and yields at the sight of my bike (!). I guess they are aware of the laws that protect cyclists’ safety in this city.  The bike lanes located on  main roads also help make the experience safer and enjoyable. My favorite bike route so far is the Lakefront Trail and I cannot wait to explore the rest of the city’s trails!

Because of this bike fever that I have, I am discovering interesting facts about biking in this city. For example, did you know that Chicago has been distinguished as one of the premier cycling locations in the United States? In fact, according to Matador Network, a travel website,  Chicago is one of the 15 world’s most bike-friendly cities. If you want to find out why, then visit the City of Chicago website  to get facts and information about biking in this city.

Anyway, I hope my experience entice you to start biking more often. It is not only good for the environment, but it is also good for your soul, your body, and your pocket. In fact, why not try to bike to SummerDance Fest for its opening show at Grant Park tonight? For those of you unfamiliar with this festival, it is the largest annual outdoor dancing series in the United States, and one of my favorites festivals of the summer. The series offers free, introductory one-hour dance lessons by professional instructors followed by music and dancing. The diverse musical lineup showcases dance styles from all corners of the globe.

However, if you need to get  a bike or fix/customize the one you already have, then send a message to my buddy Ezra and mention that you saw his information on Chicago Urbanite to get a discount for being my follower. He does a superb job!

Oh! One last thing: I am new to this biking thing. So please feel free to leave any recommendations in the comments section for this post. Thanks!

Hello Urbanites!
Today at 5pm is the opening of the newest Peruvian restaurant in town: 4 Suyos.  Located in Logan Square, 4 Suyos will feature locally-sourced, traditional Peruvian food (with a few twists).
