Win Tickets to Caravanserai Dance Party

CARAVANSERAI

This World Music dance party derives its name from Caravan Serai, an ancient  roadside motel that gave weary Silk Road travelers a safe place to park their camels, count their furs, and maybe even sip on some wine. Hot food, hand-washing stations, and live music were a must. Luckily for us, sans camels, Chicago has all those things, without having to experience the austere life styles of the vagabonds of yore. So, grab your headdress and gold coins, lace up your leggings, and join a night of music and dance that celebrates the weary traveler in all of us! The dance party lineup includes gypsy surf band Lamajamal, raucous brass/reed sextet Black Bear Combo, abstract international spinmeister DJ Warp and Middle Eastern dance performer Erika Ochoa, among others.

Sunday January 20  from 7  to 11 pm

Femi Kuti is a Nigerian musician and the eldest son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.  Anyone familiar with Femi’s career quickly realizes that he is simply not content coasting in the shadows. This refusal to fade from the limelight pushed him to break free from his father’s legacy and form his own band, The Positive Force. Femi Kuti became an artist in his own right in the ‘90s with his soulful delivery and balance between world influences and enthralling delivery.

A prominent member of the world music scene since the early ‘80s, Femi Kuti has melded afrobeat and jazz with soulful his unique sound embellishments unlike any other figure in world music. Inheriting his father’s social conscience, Femi Kuti is a social and political activist, as well. More than a musician or artist, Femi Kuti has become the artistic embodiment of his home country in the fullest sense.

Femi Kuti & The Positive Force will be appearing at Metro on January 21 and we have tickets to give away!

2012 in Review

2012 has been a very fun year! Just looking at these videos and pictures makes me smile and be thankful for your support.  Here are some of these awesome moments. You can see more pictures in the Gallery section.

Peruvian Pisco and Gourmet Food Party.

We had a great party celebrating Peruvian gastronomy and music. We learned about Pisco, the history behind some Peruvian dishes that are signature of the cuisine of Lima, and discovered why Lima in particular is considered the gastronomic capital of the Americas. See pictures of this fun event here.

First Year Anniversary Party

World music artists got together to celebrate Chicago Urbanite First Anniversary party. Here are some videos and pictures of the event:

Tribute to Inti Raymi Party

This was such a fun event! We got our friends from Pachacamak Folk Dance teach us a little bit of Andean culture, rites, and the importance of Inti Raymi in the Andean communities of South America.

Miki Gonzalez Pan-American Independence Day Concert

Miki Gonzalez, a star of the Peruvian music scene, came to Chicago to help us celebrate the Independence Day of Peru and other Latin American countries.  Here is a video of that memorable concert:

Dance Flashmob

Chicago Urbanite organized a dance flashmob in Chicago to celebrate the day of Peruvian Criolla Music.  The video of this flashmob was published Peru 21, a major Peruvian national newspaper,  in an article on their website. The article became the sixth-most-viewed on its website within a day. The event was also retweeted by TV Peru, the official broadcasting news network of the Peruvian government, as well as by other celebrities and journalists in Peru and the United States.

Thanksgiving Party

We had a great time celebrating Thanksgiving with our friends of Nu Bambu, the hottest rumba reggae band in Chicago. The event was also an excuse to get together and help our friend Juan Medrano Cotito, the Ambassador of Peruvian Cajon and member of the Afro-Peruvian electronica band Novalima,  to get donations for Christmas events that benefited children from Lima and the Afro-Peruvian community of el Guayabo, Chincha.

Giving Thanks World Music Party at Mayne Stage

We got together with some of Chicago’s cultural music instigators like Sound Culture, Worldfusion Chicago, and Akasuba to give thanks for a wonderful year in world music by hosting this free party with some of our city’s emerging talent at Mayne Stage. Here is a video of my band Nu Bambu performing at this fun party:

MUST-SEE EVENTS FOR DECEMBER

Did you miss the Santa Speedo Run at Magnificent Mile (see picture below)  yesterday? If you did, then keep on reading so you don’t miss all the fun going on this month around Chicago.

Christmas Around The World at the Museum of Science and Industry

Nobody does the holidays like MSI. Enjoy a one-of-a-kind seasonal celebration by joining them for Christmas Around the World and Holidays of Light, a Chicago tradition which began in 1942 with a single tree dedicated to the Allies of World War II.

As always, the Museum’s 45-foot Grand Tree takes center stage in the Rotunda with more than 30,000 lights and 1,000 ornaments, surrounded by more than 50 smaller trees beautifully decorated by volunteers from Chicago’s ethnic communities to represent their various cultures and holiday traditions (see picture on top of this page). Stroll through the trees, enjoy intermittent falling “snow” and savor the performances on the Holiday Stage. School choral groups perform during the week, and ethnic song and dance performances take place on the weekends in conjunction with the exhibit. I had the pleasure to perform this year with Pachacamac Folk Dance group. Click here to check the schedule of performances.

Lincoln Park Zoo Christmas Lights

Enjoy the brilliance of this annual fun and free  holiday celebration, featuring luminous displays and holiday-season activities throughout zoo grounds. Find more information about this event here.

Sing A Song

Caroling at Cloud Gate has returned on Fridays through December 21. Each Friday night at 6pm during the holiday season, a different choral group will entertain and everyone is encouraged to sing-along. The Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria kicked off this year’s performances. The lineup is the Merit Conservatory Choir – November 30; Chicago Children’s Choir – December 7; Janet Sutton and The Voices of Acme – December 14; and Apollo Chorus of Chicago – December 21. Oh! And don’t forget to ice skate at Mc Cormick Tribune ice rink while you are there.

Maxwell Street Market Dog Holiday Costume Contest

The Maxwell Street Market is getting into the holiday spirit with a special Dog Holiday Costume Contest on Dec 9. You can register your dog at www.maxwellstreetmarket.us. The event begins at 10:30am with the judging at noon. Prizes are for the top two dogs. Event takes place in the market’s parking lot. Also, Santa Claus will be making a stop at the Market that same day and your dog can take a picture with Santa. The man in the red suit will also visit with children and return again on December 16.

Dance-Along Nutcracker (December 9, 2012)

Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St, Preston Bradley Hall). Performances – 12 Noon and 3 pm. Dance Lessons at 11 am and 2 pm by ARCC Ballet – 5th Floor of the Chicago Cultural Center. FREE admission.

Sugar-plum fairies and toy soldiers of all ages return once again for the ninth annual Dance-Along Nutcracker, an interactive holiday event presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.  Audience members, young and old, are encouraged to dress in their finest tutus and hit the dance floor alongside professional dancers. Music will be provided by the Lakeside Pride Symphonic Band.

The Second Annual Afro-Caribbean Improvised Music Festival (December 12-16, 2012)

The Afro-Caribbean Improvised Music Festival takes place throughout Chicago and its suburban areas and it’s possible thanks to a collaboration between Agúzate, Latin Street Dancing, Lázaro Law Group, Old Town School of Folk Music, Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center, Sound Culture and The Willowbrook Ballroom.

Free and ticketed concerts will feature both local and touring talent from New York and Puerto Rico. Find more information about this event here

ChristKindlmarket Chicago

Each year, people from all over the world visit the Christkindlmarket Chicago. The outdoor market in the Chicago Loop has become so popular and loved by everyone that any Chicagoan will tell you that they could not imagine the city without it. Christkindlmarket Chicago is no longer just a German tradition, it has become a Chicago institution. The unique shopping experience, typical German food and drinks, as well as diverse holiday entertainment make the Christkindlmarket Chicago a preferred and popular destination. Admission is FREE!

CTA Holiday Train

The Chicago Transit Authority is getting into the holiday spirit with our popular Holiday Train! Santa and his elves will ride the train passing out candy canes and season’s greetings. The spectacular train is an amazing sight – during the daytime and at night. The outside of the six-car train is adorned with holiday seasonal images. Thousands of twinkling lights outline the shape of the train and windows, with even more lights running across the tops of the cars. Interiors of the cars are decked out with thousands of multi-colored lights, red bows, garland, and red and green overhead lighting. The hand poles are wrapped to look like candy canes. As the train pulls into each station, Santa waves to the boarding passengers from his sleigh on an open-air flatcar carrying his reindeer and decorated holiday trees. Click here to see the train’s schedule.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Imports Cuban Goods

The other night, I was at the Orchestra Hall of  Symphony Center,  waiting for the start of a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert. While waiting,  I was admiring all the beauty that this place beholds. I felt grateful for living in a city that has such an amazing space for music and such a magnificent orchestra. Did you know that the Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center was designated a National Historic Landmark and that Chicago Symphony Orchestra is one of the five American orchestras commonly referred to as the “Big Five“? The CSO does not only hold classical music concerts, but also world music events. This year, I had the pleasure of  seeing the Sowetto Gospel Choir from South Africa and Flamenco guitar virtuoso Paco de Lucia from Spain there.

This Friday, it is Cuba’s turn. Vibraphonist Stefon Harris, saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Nicholas Payton cross the 90-mile divide between Cuba and the United States in a session that blends traditional Cuban rhythms with jazz. Not only do these three virtuosos combine to generate a unique musical force, they create a true Cuban-American musical collaboration that defies political borders. Kicking off this double bill is Grammy® Award-winning Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba with an extraordinary solo set.  You can buy tickets for this show here. And if you want to see a panoramic view of the Orchestra Hall, just double click the picture below. You will feel as if you are sitting there!
