Do you like Afrobeat? Then tonight you have the chance to see a dynamic musical collective rooted in ’70s funk and jazz-infused afrobeat. Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) is not your typical afrobeat band-they add in more soul and even some hip hop influences. Rather than become caricatures of the genre, CAbP slips a reverent nod to the tradition while delivering an energized originality different from any other band on the afrobeat scene today. They are playing at the Shrine (2109 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago ) tonight at 9pm, followed by DJ Dee Money, who hosts The Shrine’s regular monthly Nigerian party night. The band promises it will be like nothing you’ve experienced in Chicago… West African dance cuts all night — modern and old school. Super fun.
