Can We Sing for Hope in Chicago?

My opera singer friend/songwriter Javier Bernardo, whom I met last year at the production of Aida for The Lyric Opera of Chicago, has the following picture as his Facebook profile:

Javier Bernardo singing for Hope
Javier Bernardo – Sing for Hope

I liked the picture so much that I had to ask him the story behind it. It was not taken in Chicago, but in New York, and the piano he is playing is one of many artist-designed pianos placed around the city for the use and enjoyment of the public by an organization called Sing for Hope. The organization has the following statement on their website:

The Sing for Hope Pianos unite our city, first as artists from all walks of life created daily spontaneous concerts and neighborhoods came together around the shared gift of music and art, and then as the pianos live on in their permanent homes. After their public residency, Sing for Hope donates each piano to an under-served local school, healthcare facility, or community organization, where Sing for Hope artists continue to bring the pianos to life year-round through classes, performances, and workshops.

I would love to see something similar emerging in Chicago as a resource for artists to engage and transform the violence that dominates our under-served communities through inclusive and accessible art for all. Any ideas on how to make this happen?

SEXomedy: Hysterical, Untamed, Unashamed

In the days of reality TV where just anyone can become famous for being married into the mob, NBA, or a rich family, it’s refreshing to see young artists climb their way to notoriety on the backs of their own talent. Chicago has long since been the breeding grounds for artists in the fields of theatre, music, comedy, dance, and performance, and is now becoming the forefront of the most innovative and provocative solo artists. Included in this exciting group is a wave of revolutionary Latino performers pushing the envelope, and breaking stereotypes. One of them is Melissa DuPrey, a Boricua from the  Humboldt Park neighborhood who has been firing up the stages with live theatre and comedy around the city.

I recently  had the pleasure to interview Melissa for CAN TV’s show Perspectivas  Latinas and talk about her  latest production called SEXomedy, a raw and edgy comedy show of one’s woman attempt to reveal her truth about sex. In it, Melissa unveils her many tales of frustration, surprise, and pleasures in the bedroom. From preparing to do the deed to the hassles of dating, from shaving to Abuela’s consejitos, Melissa dares to share what your mama never told you about sex. You will find yourself laughing, blushing, and screaming for more! Her monologue is full of very candid and hilarious jokes; however, they are not superficial at all. Through them, Melissa is addressing deeper issues, such as her perspectives about gender roles, self-image and even race in Latino and American cultures. The show is Melissa’s declaration of independence with her own sexuality and sense of being.  If you are curious about her and the show (I’m sure you are!), go to her next performance; you will have a great time. Save the Date: Novalima brings Afro Peruvian Dub, Beats and Soul on August 1st

Guys! Check this video where our friends from Novalima are sending us a shout out and personally inviting us to party with them this August 1st!

If you don’t know who they are, it is about time to get familiar with them. The band is visiting Chicago for a fourth time, and since its formation in 2001, Novalima has been breaking down boundaries, uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities and generations to create an inspiring movement that has revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru. Founded by four friends from Lima with a shared passion for both traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. Their efforts have also helped bridge the divide between the Peruvian mainstream and the Afro-Peruvian community, a minority population that has struggled against discrimination and the threat of cultural dissolution for generations. Click here to visit their website and plan on coming to their concert at Old Town School of Folk Music (4544 N Lincoln Ave) on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 7:30 PM. Buy your tickets here

After the concert, come to a free after-party Barra ñ at 10:30 pm

(2977 N. Elston, Chicago). Keep your concert ticket stub for a free glass of ñ bar’s famous sangría.

Exclusive video: Fanfare Ciorcalia Invites Us To Party With Them At Their Upcoming Concert In Chicago

Fanfare CiorcaliaNational Geographic Magazine calls their music a “complete Balkan stew.” They call themselves “the finest of Gangstabrass from the mountains beyond.” Fanfare Ciorcalia is a 12-member Romanian gypsy brass band that started as a wedding and party band in their tiny rural town of Zece Prajini and whose repertoire includes rhythms from their own country, Turkey, Bulgaria and Macedonia. Their music is 100% gypsy, fast, powerful and contagious.
